Here’s something I learned the hard way: when it comes to popup design your instincts are probably wrong.

What Is A/B Testing for Popups?
It’s simple. A/B testing (also called split testing) means running two versions of a popup at the same time to see which one performs better.
Half your visitors see Version A. The other half see Version B. After enough traffic rolls through, you look at the conversion rates and let the data pick a winner.
The trick is knowing what to test, how to set it up correctly, and when you actually have enough data to call it. So I thought I’d run you through these three things for your split testing gameplan.
What to A/B Test on Your Popups
Not everything is worth testing. I’d focus your energy on the variables that tend to move the needle most:
1. Your Headline
This is the single highest-impact element on any popup. It’s the first thing visitors read and the main reason they either keep reading or click away. Test a benefit-forward headline (“Get more subscribers this week”) against a curiosity-based one (“The opt-in mistake most site owners make”). You might be surprised.
2. Your Call-to-Action Button Copy
“Subscribe” is the laziest button text on the internet. Test it against something specific and action-oriented: “Send me the guide,” “Yes, I want this,” “Get instant access.” First-person CTA copy consistently outperforms generic verbs.
3. Your Offer
Are you offering a free checklist? A mini-course? A discount? Test whether the framing of your offer changes conversions even if the offer itself stays the same. “Free 5-day email course” vs. “Free guide: Grow your list in 5 days” can perform very differently.
4. Your Trigger
When a popup shows up changes how people respond to it. Test exit-intent (shown when someone’s cursor heads for the browser bar) against scroll-activated (shown after someone reads 60% of your page). These reach the same visitor in very different mental states.
5. Your Design
Once you’ve tested the big copy variables, this is a solid next round. Layout, image, background color. In my experience it doesn’t happen that often, but occassionally a visual change outperforms a copy change.
How to Run a Split Test in PopupAlly Pro
PopupAlly Pro has built-in A/B testing. It’s really simple to put into effect and here’s how it works:
Step 1: Create your two popup variants. Start by building your “control” popup. From your WordPress dashboard, go to PopupAlly Pro > Display Settings and build out your best guess at a high-converting design.
Then create one exactly like it but with one element changed. Just one. That’s the rule with good A/B testing: one variable at a time, or you won’t know what caused the result.
Step 2: Set up the split test. Then head to PopupAlly Pro > Split Test select your control popup from the dropdown list, then hit “Add Variate” and select your 2nd popup.
PopupAlly lets you add more variates, but if you want to keep it scientific and really understand what’s going on, I highly recommend just choosing one to measure against your control.
Step 3: Set your traffic split. The default 50/50 split is usually what you want. Each variant gets equal traffic so you can make a fair comparison.
Step 4: Let it run. This is the part I like the least… waiting. A good rule of thumb: don’t call a winner until each variant has been seen by at least a few hundred unique visitors. Calling it after 30 impressions is how you end up optimizing for noise.
Reading Your Results in PopupAlly Pro

Here’s the sequence I’d recommend for a new popup:
- Headline — biggest lever, test first
- CTA button copy — high impact, fast to change
- Trigger type — exit-intent vs. scroll vs. time-delay
- Offer framing — how you describe the same lead magnet
- Visual design — background, image, layout
Run through this cycle and you’ll have an extremely optimized popup within a few months, built entirely on what actually works for your audience, not someone else’s case study.
